Lithuania’s innovation development potential in the transport sector

7 September 2023 - 1 March 2024

Problem

What is being done to make Lithuania’s transport sector safe, sustainable, comfortable and efficient? What value do stakeholders see in innovation? Lithuania’s strategic documents indicate that innovation is needed to achieve these objectives, but the uptake of new or substantially improved technologies and processes is slow. This often sparks a debate on whether “innovation” is not just a soundbite to be repeated without concrete action. According to our survey of nearly 300 transport stakeholders, more than two thirds of respondents say that innovative solutions are essential to their operations. However, progress in this area has been slow, as some participants in the transport innovation ecosystem (the “ecosystem”) do not see innovation as a priority, focusing more on maintaining existing operations. Innovation, understood as the substantial improvement or introduction of new technology and processes, reduces costs and improves quality of service, driving growth. It is becoming clear that focusing on maintaining the status quo with archaic methods is causing companies and institutions to miss out on the potential to deliver even better results. We aim to explore the projects in the innovation ecosystem of the transport sector and the potential for active growth in this sector. By identifying the limiting factors and determining their importance in the ecosystem, we will be able to select the most influential problems and find an innovative solution to put Lithuania’s transport sector on the highway to a future of safety, sustainability, comfort and efficiency.

Goal

The aim of the project is to investigate the growth potential of the innovation ecosystem in the Lithuanian transport sector and to prepare recommendations and a pilot solution to stimulate this growth.
