Development possibilities of intelligent transport systems in Lithuania
Problem
Both in Europe and around the world, the transport sector is undergoing inevitable and important changes. As road congestion increases and energy consumption and pollution grow, acute environmental and social problems appear. The sector must respond to the urgent need to find ways to deal with these problems.
Intelligent transport systems (ITS) can significantly contribute to creating a more sustainable, safer, and more efficient future for the transport sector. ITS – systems and advanced tools based on information and electronic communication technologies, which aim to provide innovative services for various types of transport (rail, road, sea, air, and inland waters) and ensure connections between these types of transport. ITS solutions are particularly relevant in the management of traffic efficiency, safety, and travel planning. It is for these reasons that ITS has become the focus of many political and legislative initiatives in Europe.
Promoting the ITS breakthrough is closely related to the priorities of the European Commission. 2023, after reviewing the 2010 Directive on the framework for the deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems in the field of road transport and for interfaces with other modes of transport, the Council of the EU approved a new system to ensure the implementation of ITS. This directive will accelerate the digital transformation and smarter mobility in the EU. The implementation of ITS is also necessary to achieve the goals of the European Green Deal and Vision 0.
ITS helps to reduce human error, which is the biggest source of traffic accidents. Better and more efficient traffic management also reduces climate impact – road transport still accounts for most emissions from the transport sector. In addition, intelligent transport systems are one of the key steps in creating a system of connected and automated mobility for all and in developing social innovation, thereby encouraging the emergence of new ideas and new forms of value creation. Development and implementation of ITS is an important step towards smarter, safer, and more efficient mobility in Lithuania and throughout Europe.
