Motivation
Vilnius. Palo Alto. London. Cambridge. Vilnius.
I think anyone who came back would admit that there is an extraordinary attraction, a desire to express oneself, to see a quick result, to be appreciated. When I started my law studies at Cambridge, I was involved in setting up the first Citizens Advice Centre in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a country with complex and severe problems of corporate corruption, violence against women, which we were there to help solve. In the last year of my undergraduate studies, I mentioned to Dr Pippa Rogerson, one of the academics at the University of Cambridge, during a seminar, that Lithuanian students have the opportunity to work in public institutions with their own projects immediately after their studies; she saw it as an exceptional privilege to develop and gain practical skills, because in the UK, the ‘civil service’ is regarded as a very prestigious activity. I therefore choose to continue my academic studies with a masterclass in my own country – a year of work to share what I have learned.
I know I will succeed. But if it doesn’t work out the way I want it to, I already know it will be great to go home.
